Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico was a great uncle of Prince Aleksandar of Hohenberg and the younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph. Maxmillian's reign ended when he was executed by firing squad in 1867.

Maximilian is mentioned by Pancho Villa when he learns that Alek is related to him, and Pancho tells Alek that "Emperors are vain and useless things." Pancho Villa also tells Alek that Maximilian was "brave" in front of the firing squad and had wished that Mexico would not have any more bloody revolutions. William Randolph Hearst wants Alek to find Maximilian's grave so that his men can take a newsreel of it, but Count Volger says that the grave was moved back to Austria-Hungary.
