France is a Darwinist country, an ally of Great Britain and Russia in the Great War. Even though they are not Clankers, they still have an Eiffel Tower.

Deryn takes her midshipman test on board the Leviathan while the ship is flying over France. The ship also lands in France, and Deryn purchases her dress uniform from a Parisian tailor.

The Leviathan considers landing here after free floating from the Alps when they do not think that they will be able to get engines. Dr. Barlow is against this plan, because she wants to continue to the Ottoman Empire, but the captain wants to return to France with the wounded airship. Alek asks to come with them before he thinks of the plan to give the Stormwalker's engines to the Leviathan, and wants the Leviathan to let him and his men off at the random spot where they would land. Dr. Barlow thinks that he will be taken prisoner by the French, and that Captain Hobbes would not allow him to escape once he had come to France with them.
