The streets of Japan
Alek notes the mix of both Western and Eastern styles of clothing and the use of both Darwinist and Clanker technologies when he and Deryn visit Tokyo. The Japanese use telegraph lines, message lizards, and carrier hawks for long-distance communication. Alek and Deryn visit a Western-style tailor in Tokyo and eat lunch at a moving food stall. Many of the stalls are pulled by either fabricated creatures or engines, or a combination of the two. Alek and Deryn visit the Imperial Hotel, where they meet Sakichi Toyoda and Kokichi Mikimoto. Nikola Tesla demonstrates the Goliath from the Imperial Hotel.
